Unlike dogs, a cat's aging rate doesn't vary much by breed or size, so no size selector is needed. A 1-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, a 2-year-old cat to a 24-year-old, and each year after that adds about 4 human years.
This calculator uses the AAHA feline life stage guidelines: Year 1 = 15 human years, Year 2 = +9 (24 total), then +4 per additional year. Life stages (Kitten, Junior, Prime, Mature, Senior, Geriatric) follow the AAFP feline life stage classification.
Is the "multiply by 7" cat age rule accurate?
No — it's a rough approximation. Cats age much faster in their first two years: a 1-year-old cat is equivalent to roughly 15 human years, and a 2-year-old to about 24. After that, aging slows to roughly 4 human years per cat year.
Does cat breed or size affect aging rate?
Much less than in dogs. Cat breeds vary far less in adult size than dog breeds do, so this calculator (like most veterinary guidelines) uses a single formula regardless of breed.
What age is considered "senior" for a cat?
Most veterinary guidelines consider cats "Mature" from 7-10 years, "Senior" from 11-14 years, and "Geriatric" from 15 years on. Senior and geriatric cats benefit from twice-yearly vet checkups.
