Garden Planner
Plan your garden beds a square foot at a time.
A zone is only a rough start: frost dates can differ by weeks inside one. Your local extension office or seed supplier will have yours.
Square-foot gardening divides a raised bed into one-foot squares and plants each square by the crop's spacing: one tomato, four lettuces, nine bush beans or sixteen carrots. Pick a crop, click squares to plant it, click again to clear. The planting list under the bed counts squares and plants.
Companion planting is shown as a hint: a green outline means the square sits next to a traditional good neighbour, red a poor one (tomatoes and cabbage, beans and onions). The evidence behind most pairings is thin, so nothing is blocked on it. A ⚠ means the crop wants more sun than you said the bed gets.
Soil is the bed's width × length × depth. Bags round up, since three and a bit bags is four. The square-foot-gardening mix is equal parts compost, peat or coir, and vermiculite; for a bed that is already full, enter a top-up depth instead.
The planting calendar counts weeks from your frost dates: tomatoes start indoors four to six weeks before the last spring frost and go out a week or more after it, peas and spinach are sown a month or more before it, and a fall crop of carrots goes in nine to eighteen weeks before the first fall frost. The offsets follow Cornell Cooperative Extension's vegetable planting guide. A USDA zone only fills in typical dates — zones measure winter cold, not when frost ends — so use your own if you know them. The .ics download puts each task on the day its window opens, and downloading again after changing a date updates those events rather than duplicating them.
How much soil does a 4×8 raised bed need?
A foot deep, 32 cubic feet — about 1.2 cubic yards, or 22 bags of 1.5 cubic feet. Enter your own size to get yours.
How many plants fit in a square foot?
It depends on spacing: 12-inch crops like tomatoes and peppers get one per square, 6-inch crops like lettuce four, 4-inch crops like beans and beets nine, and 3-inch crops like carrots and radishes sixteen.
