GPA across 7 credit hours
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average, not a flat one — each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours before summing, then divided by total credit hours. A 4-credit A and a 1-credit F average to 3.2, not 2.0, because the A carries four times the weight.
Cumulative mode combines a prior GPA and credit total with a new semester's courses by treating the existing GPA as if it were itself one large course worth (existing GPA × existing credits) quality points, then folding the new semester's quality points and credits into the same total.
Worked examples:
- A (3 credits) + B (3 credits) → GPA 3.50
- A (4 credits) + F (1 credit) → GPA 3.20 (not a 2.0 flat average)
- 3.00 GPA over 30 credits + a 3-credit A this semester → cumulative GPA 3.09
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points (on a 4.0 scale) by its credit hours to get that course's quality points, sum the quality points across all courses, then divide by the total credit hours. This weights courses by how much credit they're worth, rather than averaging grades directly.
What are quality points?
Quality points are a course's grade points multiplied by its credit hours — e.g. a B+ (3.3 grade points) in a 4-credit course earns 13.2 quality points. GPA is total quality points divided by total credit hours.
How does cumulative GPA work?
Cumulative mode treats your existing GPA and credit total as equivalent to (existing GPA × existing credits) quality points already earned, then adds this semester's new quality points and credits on top before dividing by the combined total credits.
Does an A+ count as more than 4.0?
Not on this calculator — A+ is capped at 4.0 grade points, matching how most US institutions compute GPA. Some schools do award 4.3 for an A+; check your institution's specific grading scale if it matters for your calculation.
