Unit Converter

Most unit conversions work by multiplying a value by a fixed conversion factor. For example, 1 inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters, so converting 5 inches to centimeters is simply 5 × 2.54 = 12.7 cm. When converting between two non-base units (e.g., miles to feet), the calculation is: value × (miles-to-meters / feet-to-meters).

Only needed to disambiguate cooking from volume, which share several unit names with identical values; otherwise it is derived from the units.

Temperature is a special case — it uses offset formulas rather than ratios. °C to °F: multiply by 9/5 then add 32. °C to Kelvin: add 273.15. The Kelvin scale starts at absolute zero (−273.15°C), the coldest possible temperature.

Cooking measurements differ by country. The US tablespoon is 14.787 ml; the UK tablespoon is 15 ml; the Australian tablespoon is 20 ml. This converter uses US customary units. Similarly, the US fluid ounce (29.574 ml) differs slightly from the imperial fluid ounce (28.413 ml).

Storage sizes come in two systems. A kilobyte (KB) is 1,000 bytes and a gigabyte 1,000³, the way drive makers count; a kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes and a gibibyte 1,024³, the way most operating systems count. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GiB. Calories here are the International Table definition, and the kilocalorie is the food Calorie on a label. Horsepower comes in two: mechanical (550 foot-pounds per second, about 745.7 W), used for US engines and motors, and metric (about 735.5 W), the PS or CV of European specifications.
